WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain wants a presidential pardon for Jack Johnson, who became the nation's first black heavyweight boxing champion 100 years before Barack Obama became its first black president.

McCain feels Johnson was wronged by a 1913 conviction of violating the Mann Act by having a consensual relationship with a white woman — a conviction widely seen as racially motivated.

"I've been a very big fight fan, I was a mediocre boxer myself," McCain, R-Ariz., said in a telephone interview. "I had admired Jack Johnson's prowess in the ring. And the more I found out about him, the more I thought a grave injustice was done."

On Wednesday, McCain will join Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., filmmaker Ken Burns and Johnson's great niece, Linda Haywood, at a Capitol Hill news conference to unveil a resolution urging a presidential pardon for Johnson. Similar legislation offered in 2004 and last year failed to pass both chambers of Congress.

King, a recreational boxer, said a pardon would "remove a cloud that's been over the American sporting scene ever since (Johnson) was convicted on these trumped-up charges."

"I think the moment is now," King said.

Presidential pardons for the dead are rare.

In 1999, President Bill Clinton pardoned Lt. Henry O. Flipper, the Army's first black commissioned officer, who was drummed out of the military in 1882 after white officers accused him of embezzling $3,800 in commissary funds. Last year, President George W. Bush pardoned Charles Winters, who was convicted of violating the Neutrality Act when he conspired in 1948 to export aircraft to a foreign country in aid of Israel.

The Justice Department and the White House declined to comment on this latest Johnson pardon effort.

However, the idea has a passionate supporter in McCain, who has repeatedly said he was wrong in 1983 when he voted against a federal holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

"It's just one of those things that you don't want to quit until you see justice," McCain said of Johnson's case. "We won't quit until we win. And I believe that enough members, if you show them the merits of this issues, that we'll get the kind of support we need."

Johnson won the world heavyweight title on Dec. 26, 1908, after police in Australia stopped his 14-round match against the severely battered Canadian world champion, Tommy Burns. That led to a search for a "Great White Hope" who could beat Johnson. Two years later, the American world titleholder Johnson had tried for years to fight, Jim Jeffries, came out of retirement but lost in a match called "The Battle of the Century," resulting in deadly riots.

Johnson lost the heavyweight title to Jess Willard in 1915.

In 1913, Johnson was convicted of violating the Mann Act, which outlawed transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes. The law has since been heavily amended, but has not been repealed.

Authorities first targeted Johnson's relationship with a white woman who later became his wife, then found another white woman to testify against him. Johnson fled the country after his conviction, but agreed years later to return and serve a 10-month jail sentence. He tried to renew his boxing career after leaving prison, but failed to regain his title. He died in a car crash in 1946 at age 68.

"When we couldn't beat him in the ring, the white power establishment decided to beat him in the courts," Burns told the AP in a telephone interview. Burns' 2005 documentary, "Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson," examined Johnson's case and the sentencing judge's admitted desire to "send a message" to black men about relationships with white women.

Both McCain and King said a pardon, particularly one from Obama, would carry important symbolism.

"It would be indicative of the distance we've come, and also indicative of the distance we still have to go," McCain said.

Burns, however, sees a pardon more as "just a question of justice, which is not only blind, but color blind," adding, "And I think it absolutely does not have anything to do with the symbolism of an African-American president pardoning an African-American unjustly accused."

Burns helped form the Committee to Pardon Jack Johnson, which filed a petition with the Justice Department in 2004 that was never acted on. Burns said he spoke about the petition a couple of times with Bush, who as governor of Johnson's home state of Texas proclaimed Johnson's birthday as "Jack Johnson Day" for five straight years.

Bush gave Burns a phone number which led to adviser Karl Rove, Burns said, but Rove told him a pardon "ain't gonna fly."

Rove doesn't recall any such conversation with Burns, his spokeswoman Sheena Tahilramani said, and "if he had been approached, he wouldn't have offered an opinion."

Legendary Bay Area rapper Spice 1 was shot in Hayward, California during the early morning hours of Monday (December 3), but details regarding the incident are sketchy.

The rapper's manager, Six, confirmed the shooting to BallerStatus.com, but said despite rumors, Spice is still alive and in critical condition at an unspecified hospital.

According to Six, Spice was shot twice, once in the chin and another time in the chest, which just missed his heart by inches.

"Yes, it's true," Six told BallerStatus.com. "Right now, we're asking for everyone to keep Spice in their prayers."

Spice 1 is being treated at an area hospital, unknown due to the circumstances of the shooting. Despite being in serious condition, Six says he is expected to pull through.

Spice 1 (real name: Robert L. Green, Jr.) hails from Hayward, California. He is a legend in the Bay Area who has been releasing music since the early 90s.

He has more than 15 albums under his belt, three of which were certified gold during his days as an artist on the Jive Records roster.

He left Jive Records in 1999, and has since released numerous albums independently. JENA, La. - A video in which rapper-actor Mos Def asked students around the country to walk out Oct. 1 to support the "Jena Six" escaped comment by this town's mayor. But when John Mellencamp sang, "Jena, take your nooses down," he took issue. "The town of Jena has for months been mischaracterized in the media and portrayed as the epicenter of hatred, racism and a place where justice is denied," Jena Mayor Murphy R. McMillin wrote in a statement on town letterhead faxed on Friday to The Associated Press. He said he had previously stayed quiet, hoping that the town's courtesy to people who have visited over the past year would speak for itself. "However, the Mellencamp video is so inflammatory, so defamatory, that a line has been crossed and enough is enough." Mellencamp could not comment immediately because he was on a plane from California to Indiana and had not heard about McMillin's comments, publicist Bob Merlis said late Friday. A brief note from Mellencamp posted Thursday on his Web site says he is telling a story, not reporting. "The song is not written as an indictment of the people of Jena but, rather, as a condemnation of racism," it says. Nooses hung briefly from a big oak tree outside Jena High School a year ago, after a black freshman asked whether black students could sit under it. A white student was beaten unconscious three months later, in December. Six black students, four of them 17 years old and legally adults, were arrested. Five were initially charged with attempted murder, although that charge has been reduced to aggravated second-degree battery as four of the older youths have been arraigned. The only youth tried so far was convicted, but that conviction was overturned on appeal and the case was sent to juvenile court. Mellencamp's song opens, "An all-white jury hides the executioner's face; See how we are, me and you?" What does a high Alexa rating mean to a web master? It shouldn't mean that much as its not accurate. Alexa is a website that tracks a website's traffic history, and gives a ranking based upon the number of visitors. However the fact that it requires a tool bar to work flaws it in many ways.

Alexa works by counting on users to download a tool bar for Internet Explorer. It tracks what sites you go to, and compiles the data. For each time you visit a website using Alexa tool bar it multiples that by ten, because it is assumed that for every one Alexa tool bar user there are nine non users. This is also known as an estimate. On the tool bar it will list the rank of a website, and what other sites a user of that site tends to go to. The tool bar offers nothing else for the user except a search bar, which has terrible search results. It’s also an eye sore for Internet Explorer 7.

Alexa has no support for FireFox, Opera or Safari at all. They refuse to make a tool bar for any other browser. But wait all is not lost - they offer solutions.

Build Your Own Alexa Toolbar. Because Firefox is an open source browser, an enterprising developer might make use of that functionality and our Web Information Services Feed to create such a Toolbar.

Yes, build your own. They want to compile user traffic data from people all around the world, and their advice is to build your own tool bar. Their other solution is to ask FireFox developers to build one into FireFox.

Ask FireFox to include Alexa. In 1998, Alexa built a feature for both Netscape and Mozilla browsers called What's Related. Unfortunately that feature is not included in the FireFox browser. Write a note (http://www.mozilla.org/contact/) to the folks at Mozilla/Firefox to let them know you want Alexa AND FireFox.

Apparently the folks at Alexa have never heard of any other browser besides Internet Explorer and FireFox. This seems quite unprofessional coming from a company owned by Amazon.com.

What’s the problem with this you ask? Well the results are skewed - totally inaccurate. For instance if you look up the ranking for msn.com they are ranked #2. Now on a default installation of Windows XP, which is what the majority of people use; MSN is the homepage for Internet Explorer. All those IE users going to the MSN homepage gives MSN an unfair advantage. Take a site like Slashdot or Digg, with their user base being an incredible ~76% FireFox users. IE users on those sites are few and far between, and the Alexa tool bar and IE users are even more uncommon. Another website being hit as hard with these inaccurate statistics is MacRumors. Their site only has 13% IE users total, while FireFox and Safari are used about the same.

Aside from being flawed to begin with, there will always be people trying to exploit or game the system. AlexaSurf is a website designed to do just that. Essentially you visit other people’s websites with Alexa’s tool bar, and they do the same for you. Given enough time it could potentially increase your Alexa rating significantly.

With a growing amount of people using flawed and easily manipulated data in legitimate statistics there will always be someone to believe its accuracy. EBay auctions are using Alexa as proof they are selling a high traffic domain, scripts are being made to calculate website value based on Alexa ratings, and reputable news websites are using Alexa data to write articles about the biggest website in the world!

In short, the Alexa ranking system is naturally flawed. The data should never be treated as accurate, as it is easily manipulated, and not supported for most browsers in the world. It is an estimate, and nothing more.

Freaky deak" was released. A certain individual over at chroniccast took it upon himself to use his administrative status and tamper with the

show's description.

When Mr Riggla was first approached to join chroniccast,it was done with the

understanding that Mr Riggla is independent and will have complete creative control of the content of the shows that are being broadcasted over at chroniccast.

But the latest show that was done was very touchy as the guest freaky deak has issues with a key individual over at the chroniccentral.

Because Mr Riggla has always been and will continue to be his own man

and not a follower. Certain bitchmade antics were performed by an individual that claims that they are "hood".

This show was done with the understanding that Mr Riggla was going to remain unbiased in this interview and freaky deak would have been allowed to express himself about the individual at chroniccast that he has a problem with.

 And if the individual so choose, he could have came on the show to answer and rebute the statements that were going to be made by Freaky Deak.

But what happened was the complete opposite,the so called individual decided upon himself after hearing the show to use his administrative

status to tamper and play with the written description of the show and also post some imaginary stats concerning the show,instead

of coming on the show like a real hood nigga and addressing the show's guest "freaky Deak" like a man.

For someone that claims that they are "hood", internet gangsta typing and fake stats posting is not the way to go.
